The 4 Communication Styles

There are 4 main communication styles, and each one responds best to a different approach.

🥰 The Relator is warm and friendly.

🤗 The Socializer is enthusiastic and persuasive.

💭 The Thinker is a cautious perfectionist.

👩‍⚖️ The Director is dominant, prioritizes results and doesn't often share feelings.

🥰 For a Relator:

Open the conversation with personal questions that aren’t related to work. Don’t interrupt or confront them. Here’s an example of how Drew, a design manager, chats with a Relator.

Drew: "Hey Sarah, how was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?"

Sarah: "Hey! Yes, I did. We took the kids to the water park!"

Drew: "That sounds great! Hey, I have a question for you. Do you have time to help me mocking up a few screen for a prototype today?"

Sarah: "Sure. What needs to be done?"

🤗 For a Socializer:

Turn the conversation into a collaborative brainstorming session. Don’t show too much skepticism towards their ideas.

Drew: "Hey, Jo. I wanted to ask for your thoughts on a couple ideas I have for our next sprint. Do you have time to take a look together?"

💭 For a Thinker:

Feel free to debate them and use constructive criticism. Try not to spontaneously throw work at them - instead, come prepared with a clear ask, and when you need it by.

Drew: "Hey Josh, thanks for your suggestions on how we can engage users more effectively in our onboarding. I'd like to get a second iteration of this by Wednesday morning so we can test it with users - could you prioritize this?"

👩‍⚖️For a Director:

Refer to goals and outcomes regularly. Don’t debate things without a purpose. Here’s how Drew speaks with the Head of Product:

Drew: "Hey Ed. We’ve made some progress on the payment screen we talked about last week. The team have designed and tested 3 options that should help us get more users subscribing for a free trial."

Ed: "Okay, that’s great!"

Drew: "Let’s set up a slot where we can present our recommendation. I saw you have time this afternoon - how's 2:30?"

Ed: "Works for me!"
