#Finding Courage When Things Seem Lost

In uncertain times, it’s natural to feel lost and unsure of what to do next. Since COVID, this has only become more common. 

When your business and team are crumbling around you, it only magnifies the fear. So what do you do when you’re navigating stormy waters and an external environment that’s out of your control?

Take a deep breath, and start small. Here are 3 ways to stay grounded, even when it feels like the tide will pull you under.

#🔬 Narrow your focus

Here’s a general rule to keep in mind: the more stressed you feel, the more narrow you should make your focus. Here are a few examples:

• Instead of focusing on what you want to achieve **this week**, what can you achieve **today** 
• Instead of **all the meetings**, focus on the **one you’re in right now**
• Instead of **everyone who needs you**, focus on **one person you can support now** 

This tried and true tactic is called segmenting and is used by the Navy SEALs. When a SEAL is exhausted, they don’t focus on the next 10 miles they have to run; they just focus on moving the right foot, then the left.

#👀 Shift your perspective

It’s natural to feel like you’ve tried everything, and that nothing is working out. Executive coach Renita Kalhorn advises making two lists that will help shift your perspective.

1. Everything you *have done* so far. 
2. All the things you *haven’t tried* yet. 

In a few short steps, you’ve turned complexity and uncertainty into opportunity. 

#🪂 Do the unprecedented

If there was a good time to experiment, it’s now. The pandemic gives you permission to try anything. 

So review your list of untested ideas, and ask yourself:
• What’s one idea I can commit to trying for a period of time?
• Which of these ideas may I not have explored before COVID?

Select one idea, and commit to it wholeheartedly for a period of 30 days. Monitor your progress, and collect feedback from those around you. By the end of your experiment, you’re guaranteed to have learned something new, and maybe you'll have found the opportunity to turn the situation around.

#Getting your feet back on the ground

The next time the challenges around you seem endless and you’re unsure how to keep your head above water, use these 3 ways to stay grounded: narrow your focus, list what you have and haven’t tried, and commit to one untested idea for 30 days.
