Becoming a great leader often means taking on enormous responsibility. Whether you’re carrying the weight of a project, leading a team or heading a department, it’s sure to feel overwhelming.

But most of the time, it’s the small things that make a leader. Take it from Alex Weber, Chief Growth Officer at N26 – “It’s things like being conscious of what you can and cannot do, and never promising more, that build trust with your team.”

Let’s take a look at a few things you can do every day to boost your reliability as a leader.

#🤭 Don’t overpromise and underdeliver

When someone asks for feedback, and you just don’t have time? It's tempting to try to bend your schedule to accommodate their team’s needs.

But Weber says that’s the opposite of what we should be doing. 

"If you only promise on what you can deliver, you’ll show your team they can rely on your word. It’s much better to say no than to be flaky."

#💎 Stay true to your calendar

One of the core elements of trust is following through on what you say you’ll do. Weber says to use your calendar as a way to prove that!

Try doing a calendar audit at the start of each day or week depending on how stable your schedule is and ask yourself:

• Did any new meetings pop-up?
• Do I need to cancel or reschedule any meetings?
• Do I need to block in any focus time?

#🙅 Never skip development

You want to help your team grow, but when urgent things come up 1:1s and bonding calls are often the first thing to get dropped.

Unfortunately this sends a message that your team isn’t important. Here’s a few tricks you can use to avoid this scenario:

**Schedule all your 1:1s on one day**
Avoid planning any important deliverables on that day and delegate work in advance

**Give feedback straightaway**
There may not be another opportunity

**Prepare early**
Add agendas when you set up 1:1s and ask your team member to come prepared - make it their meeting.

#Keep reliability on your radar

When your days get so busy that one blends into the other, remember it’s the small things that count. 

Save these reminders and come back to them whenever you feel overwhelmed but want to maintain trust in your team.
